Valkensburg

Valkenburg is a charming Dutch town that feels like a fairytale come to life—especially if you love castles, caves, and cozy streets lined with cafés and boutiques. There is plenty to see and do in Valkensburg, from visiting the castle ruins to an underground adventure in the Fluweelengrot or Gemeentegrot or for the more adventurous visitors, a cycle up the Cauberg.
Every year, it plays a starring role in the Amsel Gold Race, the Netherlands' premier one-day road cycling event.

Kinderdijk:

Kinderdijk is one of the Netherlands’ most iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and it’s a stunning showcase of Dutch ingenuity in water management. Nineteen historic windmills, built around 1740, stand proudly along canals and dikes. These windmills were part of a sophisticated system designed to drain water from the low-lying land of the Alblasserwaard polder, keeping it dry and habitable. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.

Most spectacular walk

Hoge veluwe

The Hoge Veluwe changes with the seasons and brings you stunning walks. Examples of these are as follows:

  • Landscape Path: A 4.1 km cultural-historic route past the Kröller-Müller Museum, Franse Berg, and Pampelse Zand
  • Experience Route: Designed to engage all senses—touch, smell, sight, and sound. Great for all ages and wheelchair accessible
  • Berlage Path: Circles the pond near Jachthuis Sint Hubertus, offering serene views and easy walking
  • Jachthuispad: A 9.2 km forest trail leading to the historic hunting lodge Sint Hubertus

Along your walk, you might spot red deer, wild boar or mouflon.

Must try dish

Bitterballen

The mighty bitterbal. These golden, crispy Dutch delights are a beloved bar snack in the Netherlands—bite-sized balls of creamy meat ragout, breaded and deep-fried to perfection. Normally, they are servied with mosterd and some mayonnaise.

Hollandse maatjes

Also known as Hollandse nieuwe, these are young, brined herrings traditionally eaten raw and celebrated every summer in the Netherlands.

Stroopwafels

The irresistible stroopwafel—a Dutch masterpiece of sweet engineering. These thin waffle cookies are made from two crisp layers of dough, fused together with a luscious caramel-like syrup (stroop).

Toughest sport event

The Dutch Headwind Cycling Championship

This quirky, wind-whipped championship has become a cult favorite in the Netherlands, celebrated for its absurdity and toughness. It’s not about sleek performance—it’s about battling the elements with nothing but determination and a heavy steel bike.
The competition is held only when wind speeds hit force 7 or higher. The competition always takes place on the Oosterscheldekering storm barrier, a location where the 8.km track is fully exposed to the North Sea.
