Púbol

Púbol is a medieval village in the province of Girona, best known for its connection to the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí, who lived in the castle from 1982 to 1984. During this time, he was granted the title Marquis of Dalí of Púbol, cementing the village’s place in his personal history.

If you arrive early in this charming little town, take a moment to wander its quiet, stone‑lined streets and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. As the morning goes on, the calm gives way to a livelier scene when the tour buses begin to arrive and the village fills with visitors eager to explore Dalí’s world.

La Plaça Major

Historically, the Plaça major (main square) was the main meeting place where the women came to the public wash house do the laundry and later on, the stone bench was built for the cobla (the orchestra that accompanies Sardana dancing) for celebrations and festivals.

This square is surrounded by houses with beautiful portals, arches and facades.

Púbol castle

Púbol Castle appears in written records as early as the 11th century, though its current structure dates mainly from the late 14th and early 15th centuries. When Salvador Dalí acquired the castle in 1969, he redesigned and transformed it entirely with one person in mind: Gala, his wife and muse.

In a gesture that reflected both devotion and eccentricity, Dalí gifted the castle to her — but under Gala’s strict condition that he could only enter if she invited him in writing.Today, the castle is home to the Gala Dalí Castle Museum, where visitors can explore the spaces Dalí created for her, filled with symbolism, surrealist touches, and the unmistakable imprint of their extraordinary relationship.

Sant Pere Church

This 14th century church  was one of the richest in the region until the Civil War, when its treasures were destroyed, with the exception of the 15th century Gothic altarpiece by Bernat Martorell.
This altar piece is now kept at the Girona Diocesan Museum.

The countryside around Púbol is truly stunning, so it’s well worth wandering beyond the village itself. Gentle hills, dense forests, and fertile fields surround the area, creating a landscape that feels both peaceful and timeless. If you have the chance, explore some of the nearby medieval gems as well -
Monells, Catalonia ,for example, is a beautifully preserved village with arcaded squares and stone‑lined streets that feel straight out of another era.
