The Riu Rissec cuts straight through the medieval village of Monells, dividing it into two historic districts: the castle district and La Riera. Set in the province of Girona, right in the middle of the Gavarres Natural Park, Monells feels wonderfully tucked away — yet it’s only a short drive from the Costa Brava, making it an easy and rewarding detour from the busier coastal resorts. The castle district centres around Plaça de l’Oli and Plaça Jaume I, once home to one of Catalonia’s most important cattle and cereal markets. Although little remains of the original castle, the medieval walls and cobblestone streets still whisper stories of the past. Stone houses, archways, and narrow lanes create a setting that feels almost cinematic. One of the most photographed corners of Monells is Carrer dels Arcs — Arch Street. This small, enchanting street is lined with a series of stone arches that frame the walkway like a natural tunnel. In the early morning sun, the potted plants on either side glow with colour, giving the whole street a fresh, peaceful charm. Crossing the river brings you into the La Riera district, where the beautiful Església de Sant Genís de Monells immediately catches your eye. Dating back to the 11th century, this Romanesque church is the most notable landmark in the area, its stone façade standing quietly among the narrow lanes and traditional houses. It’s a peaceful corner of the village, and the perfect place to pause and take in the slower rhythm of rural Catalonia.
If you’re planning a visit, the best time to experience Monells is May or June. By then, the village is already basking in the warm Catalonian sun, the flowers are in full bloom, and the light is perfect for photography — yet the crowds of high summer haven’t arrived. You get all the charm, all the atmosphere, and all the medieval magic without the rush. How to get there: By bike: This is the way I discovered the village having cycled through the stunning area By car: Via the AP7 leave at exit 6. From here , continue on the C66 direction La Bisbal until Corca. Once there, take the GIV 6701 to Monells. It can also be reached from the C-31 By public transport: By bus (SARFA) - Line 55
