Wandering through windmills: Kinderdijk

We arrived on a hot August day in Kinderdijk, the kind of heat that makes the air shimmer above the fields. Just a short trip from Rotterdam, Kinderdijk is far more than a cluster of pretty windmills — it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site with centuries of Dutch water‑management history woven into its landscape.

Getting there is simple enough — buses, boats, bikes, whatever suits your mood — but the moment you step into Kinderdijk, the world seems to shift into a slower gear. We chose to drive, and quickly learned that the smartest thing you can do is park in the neighbouring town of Alblasserdam. There’s a designated car park with plenty of space, and from there it’s effortless to hop onto one of the shuttle buses. Parking anywhere near Kinderdijk itself is practically impossible, so the shuttle is a blessing.

Stepping off the bus, our first impression was that Kinderdijk looks like a living postcard. The grass is sprinkled with wildflowers, the water reflects the sky like polished glass, and the 19 windmills stand in a proud line, like guardians of a forgotten era. It’s one of those rare places where history, nature, and quiet beauty blend so seamlessly that you feel yourself exhale without even noticing.

But it is a very popular tourist attraction, so you won’t have the place to yourself unless you arrive very early or late. In high season, the paths fill quickly with camera‑wielding tourists, all eager to capture the perfect windmill shot.

There are several ways to experience Kinderdijk, but exploring it on foot is by far the most rewarding. The paths along the canals unfold gently, revealing new angles of the windmills with every few steps. You’ll find yourself pausing often — sometimes to capture the perfect photo, sometimes simply to soak in the breathtaking scenery.

Another memorable way to see the windmills is from the water. Hop on one of the canal boat rides, and you’ll get a completely different perspective. From the boat, the windmills feel even more connected to one another, part of a larger story woven through the landscape.

You can walk along the canal and admire the windmills for free, but with a ticket you gain access to much more. Ticket holders can hop on the water taxis, step inside two of the historic windmills, and visit the museum.

Inside the museum, you’ll learn about the centuries‑old water‑management system that helped the Dutch protect their land from flooding.

Stepping inside the Kinderdijk windmill feels like entering a different century. The moment you cross the threshold, you’re surrounded by the soft creak of wood and the steady hum of the turning mechanism overhead.

Narrow staircases wind their way up through the mill, leading you into small, cozy rooms where the miller and his family once lived. Everything is compact and practical — tiny beds tucked into corners, simple wooden furniture, tools hanging neatly on the walls. As you climb higher, you get a closer look at the impressive gears and beams that powered the mill. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of the millers who kept the land dry, working in rhythm with the wind.

Surrounding the Kinderdijk windmills were small vegetable gardens and simple animal pens, reminders that these weren’t just machines — they were homes. Millers and their families lived off the land, growing their own food and keeping animals close by.
