On an overcast evening, I rolled into the charming seaside village of Rinlo in Galicia. Just a short distance from the spectacular Playa de las Catedrales (Playa de las Catedrales: Exploring Galicia’s Majestic Sea Arches at Low Tide - The Curious Adventurers), the village is a popular stop for visitors on their way to admire this natural wonder. But Rinlo has its own claim to fame as well — the culinary specialty "Arroz Caldoso" , a hearty, flavourful soupy rice packed with fresh seafood. This beloved dish draws food lovers from far and wide, adding a delicious reason to linger in this picturesque coastal village. And as the village sits right on the coast, it’s no surprise that seafood is a staple in the daily life of Rinlo’s community. For such a small place, it boasts an impressive number of restaurants, each serving fresh, locally caught dishes that showcase the region’s maritime heritage. The village is the perfect base for exploring the many coastal paths that wind along the rugged shoreline. It’s this very rocky coast that provides Rinlo with another local specialty: percebes, or goose barnacles. Often described as the most expensive seafood in the world, it’s easy to understand why. Prices can reach up to €200 per kilo, a reflection of the extreme conditions in which these rare barnacles are harvested. Along the cliffs, you’ll spot percebeiros clinging to the rocks, braving relentless waves as they carefully pry the barnacles from the stone — a dangerous tradition that has been passed down through generations. Walking down toward the harbour, you can admire two striking wall murals depicting the percebeiras at work, harvesting these prized barnacles from the rugged Galician coastline. Every summer, Rinlo celebrates this tradition with the Festa do Percebe, a lively seafood festival centred around percebes, where visitors can sample all kinds of freshly prepared dishes under the main marquee.
The village itself is a delight to wander through. Its colourful houses line narrow, winding streets designed to shield the community from fierce winter storms. Even on the day I visited, the weather gods had whipped up a blustery breeze, adding the perfect dramatic backdrop to this charming coastal settlement. So if you ever find yourself near Rinlo, make sure to add it to your itinerary. It’s a quaint fishing village where life moves at a gentler pace — the kind of place that invites you to slow down, breathe in the sea air, and simply enjoy the moment.
