Bay Coast

Back to destination Wild Atlantic Way
The Bay coast stretches from Erris to Connemara. The route follows Galway Bay, Clew Bay and Killary harbour which is Ireland's only true fjord .

Kylemore Abbey & Victorian walled gardens:

Kylemmore Abbey was built in the late 1800s. Today Kylemore Abbey is owned and run by the Benedictine community who have been in residence here since 1920. At Kylemore abbey, you can enjoy the woodland and lake shore walks, discover Ireland's largest walled garden. Afterwards, enjoy some  food or a drink in the coffe shop or browse the craft shop.

Glassilaun Beach:

Not far from the village of Tullycross, you will find Glassilaun Beach.  The beach has the most beautiful white san
d and crystal clear waters.

Derrigimlagh Bog:

Derrigimlagh Bog is home to a Wild Atlantic Way Discovery waypoint. Derrigimlagh is home to 2 significant historical transatlantic technical achievements which took both place around the start of the 20th Century, the crash site of the first nonstop transatlantic flight and the home to Guglielmo Marconi's commercial signalling station.

Killary Fjord:

Killary fjord is Ireland's only true fjord which stretches approx. 16km from the Atlantic to the spectacular Aasleagh head where the Aasleagh waterfall drops into Killary fjord.
The fjord is a natural devide between co.Galway and co. Mayo, and the deep waters of the fjord are popular for it's mussels and abundant fish.

Galway city:

Galway is a vibrant student city located along the Corrib river which runs through the city centre. Galway is busy, and from the buskers to the people enjoying a bite to eat in one of Galway's many restaurants, there is always something new to be discovered.

Most spectacular walk

Croagh Patrick:

Croagh Patrick is a 764m mountain and is also an important pilgrimage site.  Every year, 1000's of pilgrims climb the mountain on the last Sunday of July.
The climb of Croagh Patrick results in spectacular views across Clew Bay.

Must try dish

Mussels

Fresh mussels with soda bread and a cold pint of guinnes are a lovely combination. The Connemara Mussel festival is worthwhile a visit to sample to local fresh mussles.

Gaelforce West

The original and still the best. This has always been the one to conquer and to master. It is challenging, unique and the magnificent landscape through which you travel will wow you at every turn.
67km course spanning two counties
The route takes you from Glassilaun beach in Co Galway to the heritage town of Westport, Co Mayo.

Trail/mountain running or walking; cycling and kayaking. The terrain includes mountain scree, bogland, trails, sealed roads and the majestic waters of Killary Fjord.
